CLASSIC MOVIE OF THE MONTH
Beginning of the End (1957)
Directed by
Bert I. GordonStarring
Peter Graves and
Peggie Castle
In "
Beginning of the End," director Bert I. Gordon does what he does best: craft a classic sci-fi film centered around an oversized threat hell bent on death and destruction. This time, grasshoppers have been made gargantuan after ingesting government-sanctioned, radiation-mutated vegetables. As with all things radiation-related in the 1950s, this is definitely a
BAD THING because the unstoppable swarm is headed for Chicago! Heartthrob scientist Peter Graves and sexy reporter Peggie Castle do everything in their power to stay ahead of the horde and try desperately to find some way to stop the menacing insects. Bert I. Gordon has always been one of my favorite retro directors. He's responsible for a whole host of great B-movie classics (many of which involve size mutations) from "
Attack of the Puppet People" to "
The Amazing Colossal Man," its sequel "
War of the Colossal Beast," and "
Earth vs. The Spider." "
Beginning of the End" highlights Mr. Gordon's talent for creating memorable, special effects-driven pictures that knew how to push all the right "drive-in cinema" buttons. The giant bugs in this movie were all filmed using real grasshoppers that were later composited into scenes to create an effectively creepy-crawly experience for the viewer. As absurd as the premise sounds, the movie is highly entertaining from start to finish. Definitely a must-see!

IMPORTANT MOMENTS IN SCIENCE with DR. BOB TESLA
So...Mr. Mihm is pulling me away from my lab...yet again! This time, however, he wants me to educate you all in
SCIENCE, an area I know much about...for I am Dr. Bob Tesla, official horror host of the Mihmiverse!
Set your wayback machine for August and September of 1977. Two spacecraft were launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida and they changed the world of
SCIENCE!
I'm speaking, of course, of the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft. They were truly the "little ships that could." They were only supposed to visit Jupiter and Saturn, but Voyager 2 ended up traveling to Uranus and Neptune while Voyager 1 became the first spacecraft in interstellar space and is still returning data on the conditions out there.
The engineers and scientists that built these craft deserve our respect and admiration. Imagine if you had been told your car was only going to be able to drive another 3000 miles but you ended up driving it completely around the Earth...
TWICEand, it's still going 39 years later! The spaceships might not be returning all the awesome pictures they did back in the 1980s and '90s, but there isn't much to take pictures of at 2.02 x 10
10 km away! It is because of these spacecraft, we had to completely re-think how we pictured the other planets in our solar system and, by extension, planets that are in other solar systems.
Before Voyager 1's encounter with Jupiter's moon Io, we thought we were the only planet with active volcanoes and then, when Voyager 2 encountered Neptune's moon Triton, we found out that a planet can have a dynamic geology with
ICE VOLCANOES! And, with all of that research, Voyager 1 still found time in 1990 to take a picture of every single one of us. We're that tiny blue dot in the lower half of the brown line in this photo!
I think I had my eyes closed on this one though. Can we do another?
FROM THE MIHMIVERSE TEST KITCHENS
It's not quite Oktoberfest yet,
BUT with the release of "
Weresquito: Nazi Hunter" coming at the end of this month, we celebrate the new movie with blaukraut, a delicious German side dish made of red cabbage!
2 tbsp butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 small onion, diced
1 green apple, cored and chopped
1 medium head of red cabbage, shredded
1/4 tsp ground cloves
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp water
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
Shred the cabbage by cutting it into thin strips and removing the core.
On medium heat, melt the butter in a large pot. Add the garlic and sauté until aromatic.
Add the onion and cook until tender. Add the apple and sauté for roughly a minute.
Add cabbage, cloves, vinegar and water. Cover and reduce heat to simmer.
Simmer for an hour. Check and stir every fifteen minutes. At the 45 minute mark, add the salt and pepper.
Add spaetzle (featured in the
January 2016 Mihmiverse Monthly) and a protein like sausage, pork chops or schnitzel and you have yourself a complete traditional German meal! My monster crew gives this scrumptious dish 5 out of 5 mutant mosquito men!
Genießen!

Attack Mode!
All of these deliciously cheesy B-Movies have the word "Attack" in the title. Name them.
1. (1954) Johnny Weissmuller (playing himself), fights enemy agents who are trying to steal cobalt while disguised as crocodiles.
2. (1957) Roger Corman directed and Russell ("The Professor") Johnson was one of the stars of this film about a team of scientists trapped on a shrinking island with intelligent murderous crustaceans.
3. (1958) When an abused socialite grows to giant size because of an alien encounter and an aborted murder attempt, she goes after her cheating husband with revenge on her mind.
4. (1958) Bert I. Gordon directed this film about a lonely deranged puppeteer who designs a machine that shrinks people. John Agar and John Hoyt starred.
5. (1959) A backwoods game warden and a small town doctor discover that large blood sucking worms are responsible for the disappearances and deaths of several people in a local swamp.
BONUS QUESTION!
6. (1978) A group of scientists band together to save the world from murderous mutated salad ingredients.
